Value is created by a combination of scarcity and demand, then adjusted for the quality and circumstances of the individual coin. Age alone does not make a coin valuable.
Important influences
- Rarity: how many were made and how many are thought to survive.
- Demand: the number and strength of interested buyers.
- Condition: grade, originality, damage and eye appeal.
- Variety: mint marks, dies, errors and recognised subtypes.
- Metal: precious-metal content can provide a baseline, but collector value may be higher.
- Provenance: reliable ownership history can add confidence and interest.
Use comparable sales carefully
Asking prices are not completed sales. Compare the same type, variety, grade and authenticity status, and note when the sale occurred. One exceptional result should not be treated as the normal market.
