You do not need to become a coin expert immediately. The first priority is to keep the collection secure, preserve its existing organisation and gather the information that came with it.
First steps
- Do not clean or polish any coin.
- Photograph boxes, trays and album pages before rearranging them.
- Keep handwritten labels, invoices, certificates and correspondence.
- Move the collection away from damp, heat and unsuitable soft plastic.
- Check whether it is listed on an insurance or estate inventory.
Identify the broad shape
Note the countries, periods, metals and approximate number of items. Separate obviously certified coins and precious-metal pieces without removing them from holders.
Ask for a structured review
