How to Photograph Coins for a Valuation

Good photographs allow an initial assessment of identity and condition. They cannot always replace an in-person examination, but they can make the first review much more useful.

Set up the shot

  • Use bright, diffused light near a window or two lamps placed to reduce glare.
  • Choose a plain neutral background.
  • Keep the camera directly above the coin.
  • Use a stand or rest your hands to prevent blur.
  • Focus on the coin and avoid digital filters or sharpening.

Images to include

Photograph the full obverse and reverse, then add close-ups of marks, dates or unusual details. Include the edge when it contains lettering, damage or a seam. A scale image is useful, but do not place sticky material on the coin.

Send the original files

Avoid screenshots and heavily compressed images. Add the weight and diameter separately when you can measure them safely.
