Valuations

How Coin Valuations Work

A coin valuation is an informed estimate based on identification, authenticity, condition and current market evidence. It is best understood as a view at a particular date, not a permanent guaranteed price.

The valuation process

  1. Identify the coin, date, denomination, mint and variety.
  2. Review authenticity and note any uncertainty.
  3. Assess grade, damage, cleaning and other surface characteristics.
  4. Consider rarity and current collector demand.
  5. Compare relevant recent sales and the quality of those examples.

What to provide

Clear photographs of both sides, an edge image, weight and diameter are useful for an initial review. Include certificates, receipts or provenance where available. Important or uncertain pieces may need to be examined in person before a firmer opinion can be given.

Market conditions change, and the price achieved in a sale can differ from an estimate.
