Coin grading describes a coin’s state of preservation. It gives collectors and dealers a shared way to discuss condition, but it is an informed assessment rather than an exact measurement.
What is assessed
A grader considers wear on the highest points, the quality of the original strike, marks, scratches, lustre and overall eye appeal. The coin is viewed under suitable lighting and from several angles because surface problems can be difficult to see in a single photograph.
Why grades can differ
Two experienced people may reach slightly different conclusions, especially when a coin sits between grades. Standards also vary by coin series and grading convention. A weakly struck coin, for example, can lack detail without having circulated heavily.
Before requesting help
- Do not clean or polish the coin.
- Photograph both faces and the edge in neutral light.
- Include the date, denomination, metal and weight when known.
- Mention any damage, mounting marks or previous certification.
