British coin descriptions commonly use Fine, Very Fine, Extremely Fine and Uncirculated. These terms describe broad levels of preservation; the precise boundary depends on the series and the grading standard being used.
Fine (F)
The coin shows clear circulation wear, but the main design and lettering remain identifiable. Fine detail on the highest points will usually be worn.
Very Fine (VF)
Moderate wear is visible, with more of the smaller design detail surviving. The coin has circulated but remains well defined overall.
Extremely Fine (EF)
Wear is light and normally confined to the highest points. Most detail remains sharp, and some original surface quality may survive.
Uncirculated (UNC)
No circulation wear is visible. An uncirculated coin can still have bag marks, spotting, toning or a weak strike, so UNC does not automatically mean perfect.
Modifiers such as “nearly” or “good” are often used between broad grades. Compare like with like and consider the complete description, not the letters alone.
